Seiko 7017-6040 Speed-Timer – A Forgotten Gem of the Early Automatic Chronograph Era

The Seiko 7017-6040 Speed-Timer is one of the most underrated vintage chronographs ever produced. Manufactured in the early 1970s exclusively for the Japanese domestic market (JDM), it represents a fascinating chapter in Seiko's relentless pursuit of innovation during the golden age of mechanical watchmaking.

Following the success of the legendary Seiko 6139—one of the world's first automatic chronographs—Seiko's Daini factory developed the Calibre 7017 as a slimmer, more refined alternative. The result was an elegant sports chronograph that was not only incredibly compact for its time but also featured an advanced flyback chronograph function. This allowed the chronograph hand to be reset and restarted instantly with a single push, a feature normally reserved for far more expensive Swiss watches. At its introduction, the 7017 was among the thinnest production automatic chronographs in the world.

The reference 7017-6040 perfectly captures the bold styling of the early 1970s. Its distinctive cushion-shaped stainless steel case, recessed crown, twin pushers and clean, highly legible dial create a design that remains unmistakably Seiko.
