Vintage 1975 Seiko 6138-0030 Kakume Speed-Timer Chronograph
Vintage 1975 Seiko 6138-0030 Kakume Speed-Timer Chronograph
Vintage Seiko 5 Sports Speed-Timer Chronograph reference 6138-0030, one of the most iconic automatic chronographs produced by Seiko during the golden era of mechanical chronographs in the 1970s. This model is widely known among collectors as the “Kakume” (Square Eyes) due to its distinctive square sub-dials, a design that has made this reference one of the most recognizable and collectible vintage Seiko chronographs ever produced.
This watch is powered by the legendary Seiko 6138 automatic chronograph movement, an in-house column-wheel chronograph caliber developed by Seiko during the early years of automatic chronograph innovation. The movement features automatic winding, chronograph functionality, and day-date display at 3 o’clock, with the classic dual-register chronograph layout consisting of the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and the chronograph minute counter at 12 o’clock. The outer tachymeter bezel further reinforces the motorsport-inspired design that defined the Speed-Timer line.
The dial is the highly desirable silver / champagne dial with orange racing accents, fantastic patina, paired with black square sub-registers and the signature orange chronograph seconds hand. The dial is correctly signed SEIKO 5 SPORTS Speed-Timer, which is consistent with the Japanese market Speed-Timer versions of the 6138 series. The bold orange inner track and contrasting registers create the unmistakable vintage racing chronograph aesthetic that collectors actively seek when looking for a Kakume.
The caseback is correctly stamped SEIKO – WATER RESISTANT – 6138-0030 – STAINLESS STEEL – JAPAN, with serial number 5D2025, indicating December 1975 production. The watch retains its original components throughout, making it an excellent example for collectors looking for a correct and authentic vintage Speed-Timer.
The chronograph functions operate correctly, and the watch winds and runs as expected.
The watch is fitted with original Seiko stainless steel bracelet with slide out extension and with Seiko Sports clasp, which complements the watch nicely and matches the period-correct sport chronograph design. The bracelet shows normal wear consistent with age but remains a great pairing for the watch.
Condition is excellent for a vintage watch from the 1970s. The case shows normal signs of wear and light scratches consistent with age, visible in the photos.
The tachymeter bezel and hands present very well and give the watch strong vintage character on the wrist.
This is a fantastic piece for collectors searching for Seiko 6138-0030, Seiko Kakume, Seiko Speed-Timer, Seiko 5 Sports chronograph, vintage Seiko chronograph, automatic chronograph, JDM Seiko, 1970s Seiko chronograph, Seiko 6138 movement watches, racing chronograph, or classic Japanese mechanical chronographs.
